Guest player Lennox Cush performed brilliantly with bat
and ball Saturday night to take PowerGen to an easy nine-wicket
victory over Ceramic Merryboys and into the finals of the
Wipa Twenty20 Caribbean Club championships at Guaracara
Park in Pointe-a-Pierre.
Scores: Merryboys 102 all out (17.5 overs) versus PowerGen
106 for one (15.3 overs).
Merryboys one of the favourites to lift the title, looked
a shadow of themselves as gone was the dominance of their
previous three wins. They appeared to be an entirely different
team on the night as PowerGen with their massive crowd support
ran all over them.
Cush was the star of the show. After taking two wickets
for 29 runs that helped restrict Merryboys to 102 all out,
Cush returned with the bat to complete the job with an unbeaten
57.
He and fellow opener Gibran Mohammed put the match beyond
doubt with a first wicket partnership of 92 runs. Mohammed
matched Cush stroke for stroke and entertained the crowd,
just as much as his more senior partner. Cush was severe
on anything loose and charmed the crowd with his excellent
stroke play.
Mohammed was dismissed just before the target was achieved
but their 92-run stand off 12 overs was enough to take the
win. Mohammed contributed 37 runs with three fours and Cush
stayed to the end, scoring an unbeaten 57. His runs were
scored of 43 balls and included five fours and a six.
Earlier, Merryboys winning the toss and electing to bat,
lost seven wickets for 29 runs towards the end of their
innings to fold for 102 with 13 balls to spare.
After losing Lendl Simmons (1) and Mario Belcon (1) at the
top of the other with just eight runs on the board, it was
always going to be difficult for the men from Diego Martin.
Lincoln Roberts and Richard Kelly then took the score to
31, before Kelly departed for 20.
Roberts was then joined by skipper Aniel Kanhai and they
added 42 runs for the fourth wicket, that pushed the total
to 73. Roberts then departed for 24 and this precipitated
a collapse that saw seven wickets tumble for 29 runs.
Cush with two wickets and Dave Mohammed with two wickets
for two runs were the men in charge of the demolition.
PowerGen met W-Connection Wanderers for the first prize
of $1M in the finals last night.
